We anxiously waited for a severance trial, where a judge would decide if Miles would remain with us or be given to his biological mother. Much to our frustration, our trial was rescheduled three times in the past year. Although we knew his bio-mom had not completed any of the requirements that CPS had outlined for her, it was still very nerve racking. At long last, the trial concluded on August 3rd. The judge returned a ruling this past Thursday night. He order that all biological parental rights be severed. That means that Miles is now legally adoptable! Hooray!!!!
We are not done waiting yet. She has two weeks to file an appeal. The attorneys have told us that it would be verrry unlikely that she would be granted a new trial if she did appeal. They just feel that there was more than enough evidence to substantiate the ruling. Once the appeal process/time limit has lapsed, we can have our adoption attorney request an adoption date through the juvenile courts.
The bottom line is, Miles is ours forever. It means that God was listening. That the legal system can work if enough people are willing to stand up for life of a voiceless child. It means that we are and will forever be a family.
